TIPS, TECHNIQUES & DEMOS - 14 Sept 2015

Sharon Quinton shows a new way to create the Flying Geese block, using 1/2 square triangles.
Below Sharon indicates the cutting required.

You can make 8, 1/2 square triangles at once by increasing the size of the square.
--Multiply the size of the finished blocks and add in all the seam allowances plus a bit.
--Draw your seam and cut lines going from corner to corner in both directions.  Once the seams are sewn you can proceed to cut the 8, 1/2 square triangles.
--With diagonal, horizontal and vertical cuts made you have your 1/2 square triangles.
See below.

--Stitch the 1/2 square triangles from one colour combination to each other and then the 1/2 square triangles from the alternate colour combination together and then stitch these two rectangles point to bottom.
--Finally stitch these squares together with points going in clockwise direction beginning with the top left block with points pointed upwards.   See below.
--There are options for putting the quilt blocks together.
--Blocks can be sewn together as is (see above) or sashing can be added (see below).
--Sashing eliminates difficulties with matching blocks together as well as adding some contrast and/or open or negative space.

SHOW & SHINE - 14 Sept 2015

Some of our quilters have been busy over the summer!

There were 10 Projects shown by 6 Quilters.
Great job ladies!

Linda Scott
Linda came up with this design herself.  The fabric for this quilt is from Imagination Unlimited in Cardston.  A simple quilt design that makes a beautiful finished product.  Love that fabric!

Sylvia Pankhurst
This quilt of soft and subtle colours is in a pattern that shows the fabric to advantage.

Carla Van Bezooyen
The pillowcase & tablerunner were made with the leftovers from this quilt.  Welcome back to the guild Carla!

Judy Salmon
     A quilt for her son-in-law.

Sharon Quinton
All of Sharon's quilts were machine quilted by Barb Sheen.

Strip-Made Triangles Quilt.

Barb's machine quilting on this quilt is shown to advantage from the back.

Five & Dime
This quilt is made with 5" and 10" squares, hence the name.  The edges are raw and will ruffle and fluff out after washing.

Raw Edge Scrappy Quilt made with B/W/Y.
This quilt was started in Judy Barnett's class.  The pattern for this quilt is available on this blog.  If you like this quilt, check it out.  This photo has been added to the pattern instructions as another example.
The fabric for this quilt was purchased from Imagination Unlimited in Cardston.

Barb Sheen's lovely machine quilting on this quilt is in a cracked glass pattern.  That pattern is perfect for this quilt!

Dawn Collins
Tablerunner
This kit was won by Dawn in June at the last guild meeting. She thanks the guild for this wonderful kit.

4.  Notes & This Year's Challenge
a.  Sign up sheets for Demos, Tips, & Techniques and Sew Day volunteers was passed around the group.

Very few names were added.  The executive encourages people to participate.  Volunteers are not required to be experienced quilters and there are many people you can ask for guidance.

b.  To encourage people to practice the techniques and demos shown each meeting it was put forward that a quilt will be made adding all the blocks demonstrated at each of the 10 guild meetings.  This will be our member Challenge.

c.  Guild members were asked if they would like to create projects for donation.  There was an excellent response.  Donation projects decided on were 36"x36" lap quilts & Christmas stockings.  Organizations to donate these quilts
to will be provided by next month's Guild Meeting.  Some organizations put forward as groups that might need donations were Women's Shelters, Hospitals, Extended Care homes.  Christmas Stockings were previously made and given to some of the First Nations children in need.

d.  A contact list will be made available to members at next month's meeting.

e.  Winners of two additional prizes were...
Barb Sheen, for being the first to pay for her Guild Membership.  She won a pattern for a 3D Quilt.

Ruby Quinton for being the first to arrive at today's Guild Meeting.  She won some fabric.

5.  Upcoming Events

Program     This year's program features quilter and designer, Julie Dess, a previous owner of a quilt shop and now is the manager of the Bernina shop in Helena. She is a very talented woman in all fields of Quilting.
Please have one member of your Guild prepared to give a short report about some of your guilds activities during the past year. This exchange is a valuable source of program and project ideas for all of the attending guilds.
Our Show and Tell program is what sets our party apart from the " normal " quilt shows. We invite each of our guests to bring a quilt of their own to show and tell us it's story. This is always the highlight of the party.
And remember our silent auction table - bring your shopping list
We look forward to seeing you on the ...

3rd of October in Cut Bank.
6.   Important Announcements
Due to Thanksgiving covering the 2nd Monday of the month, next month's Guild meeting will be on the 1st Monday of October.
