GENERAL MEETING NOTES -- 08 December 2015

We had a short meeting so we could get to the fun.  There were no demos, tips or techniques.  We did have lunch and played some games, but more of that further down the page.  Our Executive did a wonderful job of decorating and organizing this event.  Specific thanks goes to Sharon Quinton for the best Hay Stacks ever and for taking on the preparation and delivery of the Wheelchair Quilts; Betty Trudeau for making all the mini Christmas Stockings and assisting with the decorating; Gail Purnell for all the decorations; and Sheila Kimberley for guiding the ship and for preparing all the quilt kit prizes, getting the patterns copied, etc., etc.

Here's a massive Thank You to our executive for all their hard work!

Take a look at some of the decorations...
The nativity Set played Christmas Carols.
The tables were all decorated with these gorgeous Centerpieces.

2.  Donations for our local seniors facilities were piled up on two tables as everyone dropped their quilts off when they came in.  Take a look at all these beauties.
Linda Scott is looking at Donna Prince's contribution.  The pattern for this block is on this blog.  Search for Quilt Pattern Instructions to go to the posting.
Janet Walton is in awe at all the beautiful quilts to be donated.
LaRae McKinnon and Linda Scott are busily going through all the quilts.

3.  Early Bird winner was LaRae McKinnon.  She was first to arrive for the meeting today.

4.  A large jar of candy canes was set up on the table as we entered.  We were asked to write down the number we thought were in the jar.  We had three winners!  Each had guessed the number was 300.  The actual number was 309.
Donna Prince, Gail Purnell and Dawn Collins each received a quilt kit of their choosing from the selection at the head table.

5.  Beginning in January 2016, LaRae McKinnon will be presenting stories about quilting each month.  Thank you LaRae!

6.  We each received, upon arrival, a sheet with a selection of Quilt Acronyms.  We were all trying to fill in what each represented.  Here are the answers for those who are interested.

SHOW & SHINE -- 09 March 2015

Show & Shine was busy again this month.  Altogether we had 9 quilters showing 13 projects!   Let's get started.

1.  Sharon Quinton
     a. Snowman Applique Quilt
Sharon is on the right and Heidi Sharp is on the left.
      b.  Bears Paw Quilt
What wonderful colours!  It was machine quilted by a friend.

2.  Corinne Allred
     a.  Cut the Scrap Quilt
Great way to use up those scraps.
Absolutely wonderful Corrine.

Corrine used a fleece blanket to back her quilt.
You can see the stitch in the ditch quilting
from the back of the quilt better than
from the front.
3.  Helen Wilde
     a.  Free Moda Bakeshop Quilt Pattern.  Click here for pattern.
What a gorgeously coloured, beautifully made quilt Helen!
     b.  Stars Pattern Quilt
Oops, it's the wrong way around.  Regardless of
which way you look at this quilt you've got to admire it.
4.  Joan Strang
     a.  This is a cross-stitched quilt she started when she was 18 years old. It took her 1 month to cross-stitch the first block. Joan said her mother is surely looking down at her saying, "Finished, she's finally finished."
Joan Strang's wonderfully quilted & cross-stitched quilt.
The first block she stitched was the corner piece
closest to her.

member Jo-Anne.
5.  Judy Salmon
     a.  Extra-long quilt in blues and browns.  This is a replacement to a quilt made by her mother-in-law for her husband.  Even though his mother's quilt is worn out he still uses it.

6.  Betty Trudeau
     a.  St Patrick's Day Wall Quilt.  Betty designed the pattern herself and offers it to anyone interested. I will ask Betty if she'd mind if I posted the pattern on the blog.

     b.  "I Spy" quilt using the cathedral window pattern that Kathy Palmer demonstrated last month.

7.  LaRea McKinnon
     a.  T-Shirt Quilt.  This quilt uses a special stabilizer. You can purchase the stabilizer at Marshalls.  It is 60" wide and under $5.00/m. She brought a sample of the stabilizer that was passed around.

LaRae reminded anyone thinking of making
this quilt, to keep strips of leftovers to use
as fillers to lengthen the quilt rows as
required.
Some of the T-Shirts have information on the back & front.  LaRea has appliqued the second image onto the first.  Take a look at the Kodiaks square. "Kodiaks" is appliqued onto the block.

8.  Jo-Anne Schindler
     a.  Charm Pack Patchwork Table Runner.   This is her first attempt at free-motion machine quilting.  Jo-Anne found that she had better luck using a standard presser foot.  Practice makes Perfect.  Our first try always looks better than we think.  Keep at it Jo-Anne!

9.  Shirley Paulson
     a.  Charm Pack Star Quilt in red and cream with white surrounding the star.

thank you to Heidi Sharp for acting as associate quilt hanger.

Till next month ... Keep on quilting!
